Glossary Weather & Climate

Anemometer Used to measure wind speed.
Anticyclone High pressure weather.
Climate The weather conditions over a long period of time.
Climate graph A graph showing total rainfall and temperature during a year.
Continental climate Climate in the interior of large land masses.
Convectional rainfall Caused by rising pockets of warm air which cool and water condenses, then the moist air sinks and causes rainfall.
Depression Low pressure weather.
Desertification When  land becomes poor and infertile due to drought and mismanagement.
Dew Condensed water vapour on the surface.
Drought Severe lack of rain.
Fog Water condensed on dust particles.
Front A mass of air.
Frontal rain When less dense warm air meets cold air and the warm air rises above the cold causing rain.
Frost Condensed water vapour frozen on the surface.
Global warming The warming of the earth's temperature due to pollution.
Greenhouse effect Warm air is trapped by CO2 gasses.
Isobars Lines on a weather map to show pressure.
Leeward slope The side of the mountain not facing the prevailing wind.
Maritime climate Climate influenced by the sea.
Microclimate What the climate is like in a small particular area.
Mild Not hot, not cold. (temperate)
Prevailing wind The dominant wind direction.
Rainshadow The area on the leeward slope where it doesn't rain.
Relief rainfall Warm moist air blows in, rises over the hills or mountains, cools, condenses into cloud forming relief rain.
Temperate Not hot, not cold. (mild)
Thunderstorm Heavy rain with lightning and thunder, usually in the summer.
Weather The atmospheric conditions in a particular moment.
Windward slope The side of the mountain facing the prevailing wind where it rains.
