The Arabian Camel also called dromedary camel is a large camel found
in the north of Africa and west of Asia. This camel has only one hump. The dromedary stands between 1,7 and 2 metres of height and they weight between 400 and 600 kilos. They can withstand high temperatures without great difficulty, temperatures ranging between 35ºC and 42ºC. Due to their habitat of sand they have very thick eyelashes and very small hairy ears. Gestation lasts aproximately 15 month and they usually produce a single offspring which usually stays with its mother for 18 months. Females become sexually mature when they are 3-4 years of age although males don't become sexually mature until they are 5-6 years old. Their average lifespan is of about 25 years although they are known to live until they are 50 years of age. Dromedaries were domesticated thousands of years ago in Arabia, there are currently 12 million domesticated dromedaries in the world. They can run at 13-15 km/h carrying a rider. Today the dromedaries are used for milk and meat as well as for cargo and passenger carrying, they are also used for racing. Dromedaries kneel down for the loading of passengers and cargo. They have a reputation of being bad-tempered, obstinate and that they spit and kick people, this is not usually so, most dromedaries are very amiable and patient and they are definatelly very intelligent. Dromedaries are used in Egypt by the mounted police due to their stamina and intelligence. |
