- The Oscar is a
large species of cichlid, found in the Amazon River and the
rivers in Venezuela and the east coast of South America, down to
Paraguay.
- They reach a
maximum size of 38-45 cm. (15-18 inches).
- Temperature of
tank 26ºC.

- Oscars move in a
slow and majestic way.
- They are quite
peaceful with fish of similar size, but will eat anything that
fits in their mouth.
- They can easily
be trained to eat from their owner's hand.
- Oscars will fight
with each other with a lot of chasing and splashing but they
don't hurt each other.
- It is better to
keep them in pairs or even numbers, if kept in odd numbers the
odd one out will get picked on.
- If it's raised
with a set of fish it will leave them alone, but it can attack
newly introduced fish.
- They have their
own personality and a surprising intelligence.
- Oscars enjoy a
gentle rub from their owner.
- Oscars recognize
the person who feed them and dance in joy when they are fed.
- They like to play
with toys like a handful of rock or gravel, they spend all day
rearranging their tank.
- If they are by
themselves in the tank, the Oscar would like to play with a
mirror, some will play with it as a friend while others will
treat it as an enemy.

- Feed them a
varied diet : prawns, earthworms, bloodworm, shrimp, and a good
quality cichlid pellet.
- They love a big
juicy earthworm as a treat, they are much fun and very high in
easily digestible protein.
- Young Goldfish
are an excellent food but you must make sure that they come from
a reputable source and are disease free.
- Oscars should be
feed twice a day, in the morning and the evening. If you let
them they will eat all day long and become obese. Feeding must
be controlled.
- Make sure no
unconsumed food is left in the tank as this will make the water
go bad. Try and feed them with what they will eat in one go.

gran lombriz de tierra como una golosina, son muy divertidas y
alto en proteínas fácilmente digeribles.

- Minimum tank for
a pair of Oscars should be 120x45x45 cm. (250 litres).
- Bright lighting
tends to increase aggression.
- Avoid sharp
decorations as they constantly bang into stuff and are easily
damaged.
- Change between
20%-50% of water a week.
- Plants are a bad
idea as the Oscars detroy them and won't let them survive.
- Rocks are the
best decoration, large rocks on the base of the tank not on the
gravel, remember that gravel and small rocks will be moved by
the Oscars.
- Volcanic rocks
are ok for Oscars.
- If you use
driftwood it must be soaked in a container where the water is
changed regularly. After the driftwood is no longer turning the
water brown it should be safe to use. It's still a good idea to
use an inexpensive "test" fish before placing the wood in your
tank.
- Oscars don't need
a lot of rocks and driftwood to feel secure like other Cichlids.
One big rock is enough for them.
- You can use
artificial plants, if you do use silicone cement to anchor
the plants to the glass at the bottom of the tank. Don't spare
the cement as the Oscars will do a lot of tugging on the plants.
- Both fine or
thick gravel is ok for Oscars, although medium gravel is the
best for two reasons, it doesn't gather a lot of dirt and is
easier to vacuum than fine silt.
- Don't use
undergravel filtration with Oscars, they produce a lot of waste
and the undergravel filter will quickly be overwhelmed. Outer
filtration is a lot better for Oscars.
- Oscar tanks are
relatively maintenance free except for the regular partial
change of water.

decoraciones afiladas ya que se golpean constantemente con cosas
y se hacen daño con facilidad.

- Las plantas son
una mala idea ya que los Oscars los destruyen y no les dejan
crecer.
- Las rocas son la
mejor decoración, grandes rocas en la base de la pecera no en la
grava, deben recordar que las pequeñas rocas y la grava son
movidas por los Oscars.
- Se pueden usar
rocas volcánicas para Oscars.
- Si se usa madera
deberá ser puesta en un recipiente con agua que deberá ser
cambiada regularmente. Una vez que la madera deja de colorear el
agua de color marrón, debería ser seguro utilizarla. De todas
formas es una buena idea usar un económico pez "de prueba" antes
de poner la madera en la pecera.
- Los Oscars no
necesitan muchas rocas y madera para sentirse seguros como otros
ciclidos. Una gran roca es suficiente.
- Se pueden
utilizar plantas artificiales, si lo haces se debe usar cemento
de silicona para adherir las plantas al cristal inferior de la
pecera. Poner bastante cemento ya que los Oscars tiraran de las
plantas regularmente.
- La grava puede
ser tanto fina como gruesa para Oscars aunque el tamaño mediano
es el mejor por dos motivos, no recoge tanta suciedad y es mas
fácil de limpiar mediante succión que la grava fina.
- No se debe usar
filtración bajo-grava ya que los Oscars producen muchos
desperdicios y la filtración bajo-grava rápidamente será
colapsada. Filtración exterior es mucho mejor.
- Las peceras de
los Oscars son bastante fáciles de mantener simplemente con los
cambios regulares de parte del agua.

- You don't want
tank-mates that the Oscars will regard as food and you don't
want fish that will pester the Oscars.
- Some smaller
cichlids can give Oscars a bad time as Oscars are not extremely
aggressive compared to smaller cichlids.
- Cichlids are not
a good companion for Oscars.
- The armored
catfish knows as Plecostomus are a good tank-mate for Oscars.
These fish rarely bother each other. Plecostomus are normally
nocturnal although they come out in the daylight to feed. Their
armored bodies will protect them from the Oscars. Although you
only want one Plecostomus in a tank as they will fight with each
other. They will keep the tank free of algae.
- Some very good
tank-mates are the Silver Dollars. They get quite large and
their constant movement in the tank provides water movement
which helps filtration.
- Also good tank-mates
are tinfoil barbs.
- If you plan on
breeding Oscars it is best to remove any tank-mates well before
breeding time. If you don't remove them they may be attacked by
the Oscars or they may eat the Oscar's eggs.

armado conocido como Plecostomus es un gran compañero de pecera.
Plecostomus son normalmente nocturnos aunque se les puede ver
alimentándose de día. Sus cuerpos armados les protege de los
Oscars. Sin embargo solo se debe tener un Plecostomus por pecera
ya que se pelean entre ellos. Mantendrán la pecera libre de
algas.
- Unos buenos
compañeros de pecera son los Dólares de Plata. Pueden crecer
bastante y su movimiento constante en la pecera mantienen el
movimiento de agua lo que ayuda a la filtración.
- También los
Barbos de Plata son buenos compañeros para los Oscars.
- Si planeas criar
Oscars se deben quitar todos los compañeros de pecera antes de
la época de cría ya que pueden ser atacados por los Oscars o
incluso comerse sus huevos.
