Apollo Missions
Six crews of American astronauts made successful Moon lnadings between July 1969 and December 1972.
The commander of each mission remained in orbit round the Moon while the lunar module undocked and took two astronauts down to the surface.
When the astronauts had finished working on the surface, the lunar module launched them back into orbit, they rejoined the command and service modules which carried all three astronauts back to Earth.
The Apollo astronauts collected 400 kilograms of Moon rocks in all and carried out a variety of experiments. The last three crews took an electric powered Lunar Rover or Moon buggy to ride in so they could explore further afield.
